Pioneers Medical Center Receives Coal Transition Community Grant

Pioneers Medical Center is excited to announce that we’ve been awarded a $600,000 Coal Transition Community Grant to fund the implementation of our new Meditech electronic medical health system. Our adoption of the Meditech system will provide significant benefits to our patients, including:

Implementing Meditech Helps PMC Expand Medical Tourism and Create New Jobs

The purpose of the Coal Transition Community Grants is to provide support and assistance to Colorado communities who have traditionally been reliant on the coal industry as a primary driver of their economy. As we transition to more clean energy solutions, it’s critical to ensure rural coal communities are able to maintain a thriving economy. Our implementation of Meditech will play a major role in helping the Meeker economy move away from its reliance on coal mines and coal-fired power plants.

Since we opened our specialty orthopedics clinic, Colorado Advanced Orthopedics (CAO), we’ve seen a tremendous growth in medical tourism. Over the past three and a half years, approximately 60% of our orthopedics patients and 26% of our hospital patients have come from outside the White River Valley. This increase in out-of-town patients has been the driving force behind both the upcoming PMC three-year expansion plan and the recently completed expansion of the CAO clinic.

The adoption of Meditech and these new expansions will increase our patient capacity, and we expect to have over 10,500 out-of-town patients by 2025. This will have a significant impact on our local community:

• Directly create 6 new jobs
• Indirectly support the creation of 31 additional jobs, with the potential for even more job creation down the line
• Generation of $1.5 million in direct, indirect and induced payroll
• Over $3 million in direct, indirect and induced value added (a measure of the contribution to GDP)
• $18.9 million in overall economic impact for the town of Meeker

The funding we’ve received from the Coal Transition Community Grant is playing a major role in our ability to help stimulate the local economy as energy jobs in the area continue to decline.
